The
OneClock
Story

A few years ago, my wife and I committed to getting our phones out of our bedroom and taking our sleep seriously. But I still needed an alarm clock.

I wanted something simple -- a tactile timepiece that would last a lifetime and sound amazing, without WiFi or Bluetooth. I searched everywhere for a modern analog clock that would wake me up with beautiful music, but I couldn’t find it, so I made it.

Why: I bought OneClock because I was using my phone as my alarm while running my own (international) business, and every morning as I would go to turn my alarm off I was seeing an average of 250 notifications -- first thing my eyes would see. I did this for years, only eventually coming to realize, with help, that this set myself up for a day without any peace. Every morning became a race to catch up, where one team member would fall asleep another would wake up, so any of the times I did actually get to bed, it was only for a 4-5 hours at a time and always with an inevitable knowing that I would wake to an immediate press. Something had to give, and I realized I needed to get my phone out of the bedroom and find an alternative, analog-style wake alarm that did not offer any routes for the internet to get to me. In this regard, OneClock seemed and seems to have no competitor in its class. First interactions, & the Call to Action: It has improved my sleep, once I made a few adjustments to my own sleep routine and hygiene. At first, after having set it up, and with my typical sleep routine of 4-5 hours, I had wondered if its alarm was actually working. I would wake up far later, late for things. So I brought my phone back in and set the same alarm + a few extra. The first woke me up, just as I was hearing the OneClock alarm sounding. I realized that prior to this I was just sleeping straight through the alarm. So I turned OneClock's volume all the way up and did away with the phone again. Next 3-4 mornings: I woke up to OneClock's transcendent, ambient sounds, and then would immediately roll over and sleep for another 3-4 hours. It was simply so lullaby-y that I just fell right back into a peaceful sleep to the point of what I actually needed to sleep to. Not great for those days' task lists. But... Shifts: I began realizing that OneClock was trending me in a direction of two points: 1. I don't know how, but it has come to seem as if this inanimate, analog object has been hushedly encouraging me to improve my sleep hygiene on a holistic level. The past 2-3 nights I've been in bed by 9:30pm (formerly 4am-ish), which means I am improving my sleep practices in a way to where I am getting a full REM sleep. I am sleeping long but this feels like catch up. These going-to-beds-early aren't forced. I'm 35 and I'm (deservedly) tired by 9pm, and I'm allowing my self to go to bed. This leads me to believe that.. 2. My perspective on the concept of "mornings" is changing -- where for going on 6 years years they've been either nonexistent (because of working all-nighters) or dreaded (because I'm not working all-nighters), my arrival to them recently could be said to be "clear" or "clean". I have reinitiated my sitting practice. I make my morning smoothies in a sense of serenity. I am doing my stretches and PT at the same time each day. My morning routines are performed in earnest; they aren't hurried, or done haphazardly. With OneClock I've regained my ability to *choose* the moment I look at work; and the wildest part is, because I'm arriving to it with a better rested mind and body, it's all still getting done because I'm more efficient. Additionally, I'm not resentful when I sit down to my work, as it hasn't stolen my morning from me. More -- the same could be said for my relationship to "night": besides the fact that it's almost by magic that its ambient peace-to-come (thank you Jon Natchez) is hypnotizing me to go to bed earlier. I'm also reading again, I'm resting in complete darkness when I put the book down. I'm comforted by this clock. It's almost odd in the way it feels like it protects me. Appeal to Context: Sure, there are many other moving parts to my successes of shifting my relationship to sleep and waking and mornings. It's not *just* the alarm clock; I have worked hard and primed for this kind of return to health. But OneClock is no doubt an essential tool in the mix of this success and I am confident in this success's longevity. It's now a staple for life. Summary: For all these reasons, I'm actively advocating this tool to my friends. So, to sum up 👇 OneClock, for me, is an essential Life Tool, that forces you to confront your poor sleep hygiene and pratices head on (just look at Jamie's quote, "snoozers are for losers"). It won't work for you if you aren't willing to change; if you are, it will lead you to a better, healthier life. You have to put in some work; it's not just: "I keep living the same way and all the sudden I'm better." If you allow it--and I encourage you that you do--OneClock will lead you to a better, healthier life. It has changed my life far more than how I'm woken up; it's changing my conceptual relationships to rest, to night, to work, to mornings, etc.
